Looking Ahead To A Big Day Of College Sports

College football bowl season is here and it should be well worth the wait (seven days have passed since the last college football game… remember the good old days when there was an actual gap between the regular season and bowl season?). Meanwhile, a tremendous slate of college basketball games is on tap that includes #1 Indiana. First things first, here are my picks for today’s two bowl games:

(New Mexico Bowl) Arizona 48, Nevada 21: Nevada has lost four of their last five. This game should not be close. Expect Arizona to score 30+ in the first half.

(Potato Bowl…yeah, Potato Bowl) Toledo 33, Utah State 30: Utah State has won games this year with their defense. I think Toledo will score enough to come out with a win.

Now, let’s switch back over to college basketball. Personally, I’m pretty pumped to see Indiana take on Butler. 9-0 Indiana is scoring just a touch under 90 points per game, making them the top scoring team in the nation. 7-2 Butler is one of the best defensive teams in the country. They knocked off UNC earlier this year in a game where they held the Tar Heels to only 18 points in the first half. The game will feature two of the  nation’s top coaches as well: Indiana’s Tom Crean and Butler’s Brad Stevens.

Another intriguing game pits #5 Florida against #8 Arizona. Florida is coming off an impressive blowout win over in-state rival Florida State. At 8:00, #3 Michigan will face off against offensively challenged West Virginia. Look for West Virginia’s defensive to give the Wolverines some problems. One last game to keep an eye on: Belmont at Kansas. KU will be tested by a good Belmont team that has already notched wins over Stanford and Middle Tennessee.
