I’m not sure how we are already in the fifth week of college football season, but somehow we are. Here are some picks for a really good slate of games this week:
Georgia Tech 20, Virginia Tech 14: The Hokies’ offense has been an unmitigated disaster so far and Georgia Tech has looked pretty good. I’m taking the Jackets at home.
South Carolina 37, UCF 17: Oddly, UCF is the host in this game. The Knights are a good team too, but even with the home field advantage the Knights won’t be able to pull off an upset against the Gamecocks.
Washington 35, Arizona 17: Both of these teams have been pretty dominant so far this year, but the Huskies have played much better competition. I’ll take Washington at home.
Notre Dame 21, Oklahoma 13: Tommy Rees was bad, but Notre Dame’s 17-13 win over Michigan State restored some of my faith in the Irish. Their offense isn’t likely to put on a show against a solid Sooner defense, but I also think Diaco’s defense should give a work-in-progress Sooner offense some trouble. Plus, I trust Notre Dame a lot more at home.
Stanford 33, Washington State 20: While this is the best Washington State team in years, Stanford is, um, Stanford.
Alabama 35, Ole Miss 14: Looking ahead, this might be Alabama’s second toughest remaining regular test after the LSU game (the roadie against Auburn could be interesting too). They’ll pass it.
Arizona State 24, USC 16: Arizona State got outclassed by Stanford last weekend, but I think they will rebound against the offensively feeble Trojans.
Georgia 31, LSU 28: This should be an awesome battle between a couple of SEC giants. Georgia didn’t exactly impress last week against North Texas but I think they will be sharp enough at home to get by the Tigers.
Ohio State 41, Wisconsin 31: The Buckeyes are coming off a 76 point drubbing of Florida A&M while Wisconsin steamrolled a terrible Purdue team last week. This game should be pretty wheelhouse and is the Buckeyes first real test of the year. At home, look for OSU to race past a good Badgers team.
